Preamble:The “Western Lifestyle” is dependent on the secure, global flow of people, goods, and information and the dependable and secure operation of extensive, complex networks {e.g. transportation, communication, energy distribution, water supply, food distribution, finances, etc.}. These Critical Infrastructures are embedded with microelectronic devices (Critical Embedded Systems) that monitor and control them. These diverse networks of sensors, actuators, and processors that collectively form the “global nervous system,” are critically dependent on the reliable operation of devices which might be sourced or designed in a globally distributed manner. Goal:To provide a forum for the discussion of both the Process (“The Design Methodology”) and the Product (“The dependable Global Nervous System“) that will lead to a formal discipline of Critical Embedded Systems and Global Security Engineering. The Process:The Global Security Design Methodology insures the implementation and dependable and secure operation of transportation and other Critical Infrastructure in the context of “All Hazards.” The Product:The dependable infrastructure for the “global nervous system” underlying the “Western Lifestyle.” The dependability of the infrastructure in turn depends on the reliable operation of the microelectronic devices that are embedded within its fabric. The Workshop is focused on three areas:· Microelectronic Design Methodology applied to Security Engineering including using System Level modeling and simulation tools to design and implement Ambient Intelligence Networks · The overlap between specifying, testing and verifying trusted microelectronics devices and the reliability of critical infrastructure and other mission critical systems based on those devices. · Global Security challenges, concepts and best practices through cooperative programs with a number of European and other International Conferences The Workshop is envisioned as the prototype for the Barbara Rucinska Memorial Global Security Engineering Workshop Series, associated with many relevant Conferences on a global scale {e.g. Water Side Security 2008 WSS 2008 {Copenhagen, www.wss2008.org}; 1st International IEEE Conference on Information Technology 2008 IT’08{Gdansk, www.it2008.gda.pl/} Attendees will also have an opportunity to discuss the structure and the content of a Special Issue of the Proceedings of the IEEE on Global Security Engineering. |
